Osun workers begin strike, warn Aregbesola

Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commenced a three-day warning strike. The workers advised Governor Rauf Aregbesola to use this week to address their demands to forestall an indefinite sit-at-home.

They explained that the action was to protest the non-payment of the arrears of modulated salaries of workers as well as pensions and gratuities of the retirees. NLC Chairman in Osun State, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, announced the strike on Tuesday.

He recalled that the Congress had declared the strike following the expiration of an ultimatum given to the state government to commence payment of the outstanding salaries.

“We are starting three-day warning strike Wednesday. We are embarking on this strike because of the salary arrears as well as gratuities of pensioners”, Adekomi said. “The government also owes its own part of the contributory pension deductions and 2016 leave allowances. We issued an ultimatum earlier and this is the next option.

“The government started modulated salaries in July 2015 and they have paid the balance of three months of the modulated salaries since that time,” he said.

He blamed the Sallah break for the delay, adding that the tripartite committee involved with the review of the wage will conclude its work on Sept. 4th and 5th. According to him, “We believe that the initial expectation that by September a new minimum wage should come on board, we think that the government still should be able to deliver that to Nigerians.

“Nigerian workers will continue to demand that from the government and as soon as this report is submitted, the government should do the needful before the National Assembly because that is the process. “We expect that the National Assembly will play its part in speedily considering the bill that will be placed before it and do everything possible for Nigerian workers to have a new minimum wage.’’

News SERAP, pensioners drag Buhari to ECOWAS Court

They also want President Muhammadu Buhari to order the payment of same directly to the pensioners and workers on a-monthly basis.

Kogi imprudently buys into competency test

AMAZED by the public support that welcomed Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s controversial competency test, Kogi State appears to think it would not be a bad idea to execute the same policy. In Kaduna State, public primary school teachers were recently made to write a test designed to test Primary Four pupils. A full two-thirds of the public school teachers, a little fewer than 22,000, were deemed to have scored less than 75 percent, the pass mark. Consequently, Kaduna State was reported to be preparing to sack the teachers if they do not resign as they have been asked to. A stalemate appears to be developing, with no teacher indicating any interest in disengaging from the public service, and the teachers’ union desperately up in arms against both the policy and the government.

Aero Contractors suspends workers indefinitely

Nigeria’s second largest commercial airline, Aero Contractors, has sent its workers involved in scheduled services on indefinite leave due to the country’s harsh economy.
In a statement, the management of the airline announced the suspension of its “schedule services” from September 1, 2016.

The statement said the depreciation of naira within the last six months has made it impossible for the airline to achieve its operational targets. According to Aero, the suspension was part of the strategic business realignment to reposition and return the airline back to profit making.
The airline said, “The impact of the external environment has been very harsh on our operational performance, hence management decision to suspend scheduled services operations indefinitely effective September 1, 2016, pending when the external opportunities and a robust sustainable and viable plan is in place for Aero Contractors to recommence its scheduled services.

“The implication of the suspension of scheduled services operations extends to all staffs directly and indirectly involved in providing services as they are effectively to proceed on indefinite leave of absence during the period of non-services.“We are aware of the impact this will have on our staff and our highly esteemed customers, hence we have initiated moves to ensure that we are able to return back to operations within the shortest possible time, offering reliable, safe and secure operations, which the airline is known for.
