It is common knowledge that Kwara state was one of the states
owning its workers. However, the Federal Government intervened by giving out a
special intervention fund. Kwara State got a total of N4.320 billion from the
special intervention fund.
However the primary school teachers are still languishing in
pain because they have not been paid for
5 months. Nonpayment of salary was the reason the teachers went on a strike in
January. According to the First Vice Chairman of Kwara State chapter of Nigeria
Union of Teachers, (NUT), Mr. Olu Adewara om January, “by God’s grace, we have
been patient enough with our employers, so we have resolved to continue with
the strike until all the debts owed us are paid. In his words, “Some of our
members have become paupers and the state government should stop telling us
that it is not their responsibilities, but that of the LGAs to pay salaries of
primary school teachers. We understand that there is a synergy between the
state and the councils. We are simply
awaiting the salaries because; it is unfair to work without remuneration.”
How do the people at the helm of affairs in kwara state
sleep at night? Do they careless because
their own salary is guaranteed? Why
would you owe teachers for 5 months? This is really serious.
