Activities of commercial sex works are overshadowing those of exhibitors and traders at the 2016 Jos Trade Fair, holding at the Jos Polo Field, in Jos North local government area of Plateau state.
A PREMIUM TIMES’ reporter at the trade fair Thursday night noticed hordes of young sex workers brazenly soliciting patronage by male participants at the event.

One of the young workers, who refused to give her name, said the illicit trade was booming because the cold weather in the city made exhibitors and visitors from outside the city disposed to their services and other available forms of hospitality.

Aero Contractors suspends workers indefinitely

Nigeria’s second largest commercial airline, Aero Contractors, has sent its workers involved in scheduled services on indefinite leave due to the country’s harsh economy.
In a statement, the management of the airline announced the suspension of its “schedule services” from September 1, 2016.

The statement said the depreciation of naira within the last six months has made it impossible for the airline to achieve its operational targets. According to Aero, the suspension was part of the strategic business realignment to reposition and return the airline back to profit making.
The airline said, “The impact of the external environment has been very harsh on our operational performance, hence management decision to suspend scheduled services operations indefinitely effective September 1, 2016, pending when the external opportunities and a robust sustainable and viable plan is in place for Aero Contractors to recommence its scheduled services.

“The implication of the suspension of scheduled services operations extends to all staffs directly and indirectly involved in providing services as they are effectively to proceed on indefinite leave of absence during the period of non-services.“We are aware of the impact this will have on our staff and our highly esteemed customers, hence we have initiated moves to ensure that we are able to return back to operations within the shortest possible time, offering reliable, safe and secure operations, which the airline is known for.

Unpaid wage worsens Nigerians’ health, says NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association on Sunday said non-payment of workers’ salaries in many states in the country had worsened the health condition of Nigerians.
The NMA’s position was contained in a communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting in Enugu.

In the communique, read by its President, Prof. Mike Ogirima, the medical association asked the Federal Government, to, as a matter of urgency, provide special bailout for workers’ salaries and prevail on state governments to pay them as and when due.

JUSUN declares Oshiomhole anti-workers gov

The ‎Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) on Sunday described Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, as anti-workers as he is bent on enslaving workers in the state only to turn round and castigate other governors for the same reason.

The workers said Oshiomhole has continued to display a high level of ‘hypocrisy’ by using legal provisions as a ‘shield’ to protect himself and as a ‘sword’ to fight the poor workers.
They stressed that a situation where governors won’t pay salaries as stipulated by law, and when workers embark on strike, no work no pay principle is applied would not promote industrial harmony in the country.
National President of JUSUN, Comrade Marwan Adamu, who was speaking during the 3rd National Delegates Conference of the union in Katsina, therefore advocated that no work, no pay be expunged ‎from the trade dispute act.

Adamu explained that this is necessary because such provision negates the whole excess of ‎collective bargaining, social dialogue and of course increase productivity.
“I read in the dailies where a state governor who owe my members seven months salaries, on the pretence of no work no pay, 18 months for local government workers, 42 months arrears of pension and gratuities is saying it is a criminal breach of contract for employer not to pay workers’ salaries, what a hypocrisy.

“It is sad that Oshiomhole who is a product of court himself will go against a court order, instructing him to respect the provision of the constitution, even when he did not appeal against the judgement,” Adamu stated.

Nigeria suspends tenure policy in federal civil service

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday ordered the suspension of the tenure policy in the federal civil service with immediate effect. The policy, introduced by a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Steve Oronsaye, under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua administration, prescribed two terms of four years each for permanent secretaries of ministries, while directors were entitled to an eight-year tenure.

The policy also affected top level officers in federal ministries, departments and agencies.
But, a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Communication in the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Haruna Imrana, said the directive to drop the policy was contained in a circular to all ministries, departments and agencies, signed by the HOCSOF, Winifred Oyo-Ita.
The circular, which conveyed the president’s directive on the suspension, said the order took immediate effect, while all concerned were urged to comply accordingly.

The spokesperson said with this circular, the eight-yearstenure policy for directors, which was introduced some years back, has now been suspended. He said the implication was that civil servants could now stay in service until they are 35 years in service or they turn 60.

May Day Speech By President Muhammadu Buhari

SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER – IN – CHIEF, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2016 NATIONAL MAY DAY CELEBRATION HELD AT THE EAGLE SQUARE, ABUJA ON SUNDAY, MAY 1, 2016

Great Nigerian Workers!
Great Nigerian Workers!
I bring you greetings.

It is with great pleasure that I honour the invitation by the two Federations of Trade Unions, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to attend the 2016 National May Day celebrations. As you all know, this is my first outing in this forum which has a long and historical tradition that are noble and progressive. The efforts of all the heroes past who had fought for the workers of all nations to have a ‘voice’ in determining the course and direction of both national and international issues affecting the state of their being, are commemorated today, the first day of May all over the world. Labour remains unarguably an important element in any policy, programme and project propagated for national development.
This year’s celebration is significant in a number of ways. First, it marks the first May Day celebration under the All Progressive Congress (APC) Administration which brought an end to the sixteen (16) years of national squander, bad governance, unbridled corruption and economic woes by the previous administration. Second, it is coming at a time when the whole world is experiencing some form of economic crisis or the other.

Twenty-six States Owe Workers' Salaries On May Day

As Nigerian workers today join their counterparts across the world to celebrate May Day,  gloom, frustration, bitterness, anger, lamentation, and despair are not enough to describe their mood as not more than 10 states have fully paid workers’ salaries and allowances up to date.

Kwara State Primary School Teachers languish in Pain

It is common knowledge that Kwara state was one of the states owning its workers. However, the Federal Government intervened by giving out a special intervention fund. Kwara State got a total of N4.320 billion from the special intervention fund.

However the primary school teachers are still languishing in pain because they  have not been paid for 5 months. Nonpayment of salary was the reason the teachers went on a strike in January. According to the First Vice Chairman of Kwara State chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), Mr. Olu Adewara om January, “by God’s grace, we have been patient enough with our employers, so we have resolved to continue with the strike until all the debts owed us are paid. In his words, “Some of our members have become paupers and the state government should stop telling us that it is not their responsibilities, but that of the LGAs to pay salaries of primary school teachers. We understand that there is a synergy between the state and the councils.  We are simply awaiting the salaries because; it is unfair to work without remuneration.”

How do the people at the helm of affairs in kwara state sleep at night? Do they careless because their own salary is guaranteed?  Why would you owe teachers for 5 months? This is really serious.
